Sunday Night Synthesis is now a weekly series at the LWM Music YouTube Channel. Dr. Lawrence W. Moore presents different topics each week that cover the whole wide world of synthesis, both analog and digital, as well as both hardware and software. Episode 06 – Ring Modulation – Making a Dalek Voice from Doctor Who – This is a zip file of the patches used in this video.

In this week’s episode of Sunday Night Synthesis, we will be using Pure Data to employ amplitude modulation and ring modulation, more specifically. This is an effect that one can use to imitate a dalek voice, from the popular British science fiction series, Doctor Who. One can also use this effect on instruments and non-vocal samples as well. Ring modulation can be used in real-time or as an effect applied to recorded samples. ring modulation and amplitude modulation as a whole is one of the fundamental approaches used in synthesis and electronic music as a whole.

Episode 05 – Making Mobile Music Apps with MobMuPlat & Pure Data – This is a zip file of the patches used in this video.

Pure Data is a very powerful programming environment for digital audio, synthesis, and music in general. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have very nice controls and graphic user interface possibilities. One answer to this is to use MobMuPlat, mobile music platform, to create graphic user interfaces for your PD patches. These interfaces can the run in tandem with the Pure Data patches that you create in the MobMuPlat platform for iOS and Android operating systems. In other words, you have the power of PD on your cell phone or tablet. MobMuPlat has all sorts of graphic widgets that one can use and allows for one to utilize custom graphics that can be integrates with the MobMuPlat backgrounds and widgets. This video shows a basic Pure Data patch and the creation of a simple MobMuPlat interface to introduce the concept. Episode 04 – Filtered Noise & Wave Sounds in Pure Data – This is a zip file of the patches used in this video.

In this week’s episode, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore demonstrates the use of filtered noise to make wave sound effects in Pure Data. This episode shows a fairly simple patch that creates the sound of ocean waves using filtered noise. The patch demonstrates the use of the noise~ object for generating white noise and the use of the vcf~ object for filtering that noise. Dr. Moore demonstrates how the patch then uses a generated cosine wave to create the shape of a wave to control the filtered noise. the patch is made in stereo such that the wave sound pans across the stereo spectrum. This patch can be used to make relaxing wave sounds giving the user control over the speed of the waves and the balance between the discrete wave sound and the noise of the ocean background noise. PD provides an easy way to make ocean wave sounds.

Episode 03 – Making a Delay Effect with Pure Data – This is a zip file of the patches used in this video.

One of the most useful effects in electronic music is delay, which can be used to create both timbre-based, rhythmic, and harmonic intensity in one’s music. It is also one of the more simple effects that one can make. In Pure Data, producing a simple delay is quite easy and the benefits of this kind of effect are quite rewarding musically. In this video, Dr. Lawrence W. Moore shows how one can employ the delwrite~, delread~, and vd~ objects in PD to make some dynamic delay and reverb happen with a simple design and a lot of control.

Episode 02 – Excerpts from Psyche Electro-Acoustic Opera’s Myths & Spirits

On Saturday, August 26th, 2017 Lawrence W. Moore and his wife, Liza Seigido, presented the inaugural performance of the Psyche Electro-Acoustic Opera Company that they founded. Moore presented two pieces from the opera, Shibeth, that he is producing. these pieces were Begin End Cycle and End Cycle Begin, which features Moore on modular synthesizer components, Brigette Cormier as the dancer/choreographer who performs the part of Shibeth, and Liza Seigido as the voice of the unknown spirit that speaks to Shibeth. Shibeth is an opera that ask questions and ponders on just what might happen and be experienced by one who has died. In the opera, Shibeth dies and an encounters strange experiences. One of these experiences is an unknown spirit that tries to lure her into accepting that upon her death, her individuality is finished and all that is left is for her to be recycled back into the whole. Shibeth has a strong spirit and attempts to resist and hold on to herself, which is truly, the only thing she ever had before and after her life experience.

Episode 01 – Sample Looping & Virtual Tape Loopers – This is a zip file of the patches used in this video.

This week’s episode was requested by a viewer who expressed an interest in the Tape looper example that was used in Series 01 Episode 11 previewing the upcoming LWM Rack releases. This Pure Data patch was a tape Looper that was made for the early version of LWM Rack and was never released. There were some functions and features that Dr. Moore was never quite satisfied with. For this episode, he is now releasing some sample patches of various approaches to looping samples and creating virtual tape loopers in PD. The experimentation that Dr. Moore explored culminates in what he initially wanted in this tape looper module. With the release of LWM Rack v1.00b now sporting a sleeker design, Moore plans to make a module utilizing this functionality within the LWM Rack virtual modular synthesizer framework.
